This Thanksgiving weekend, we were reminded once again of the precarious safety of aid workers worldwide. Two men and one woman working for the Spanish organization Barcelona-Accio Solidaria were kidnapped while delivering humanitarian aid, including sewing machines and computers, near Nouadhibou, Mauritania.
The authorities suspect Al Qaeda in Islamic North Africa who has claimed responsibility for the murder of American Christopher Leggett, and is suspected in the killing of four French tourists in 2007.
Press TV now reports that an unnamed Moroccan security source has said that the three aid workers were abandoned by their kidnappers in the Aguouimite region, and will soon be in safety, but Spain’s ambassador was unable to confirm the report this morning, and a Moroccan government official denied the statement, calling it “pure speculation.” Let’s hope the reports are true.
The remaining members of Barcelona-Accio Solidaria’s aid group have pledged to continue their work and continue on their planned course, albeit with military protection.
